At ISSL we have had a busy fall term. We began with our celebration of Jouen Kweyol. At lunch our cafeteria staff served
traditional Creole fare. Once lunch was finished, we headed to the gym where we were treated to some historical references
and a student and staff fashion show. Then the students travelled in their house groups through a variety of Creole activities
including storytelling, dancing, games and cooking. Many students and teaches took advantage of the opportunity to celebrate
the Creole heritage buy donning their colourful madras clothing. All in all it was a very successful day.
Jouen Creole
was soon followed by a Halloween celebration. Our elementary students paraded through the school to receive treats from the
secondary school. The intermediate and senior students had two successful dances. These events were organized and sponsored
by the student Council and the proceeds from these events will be used for future activities.
The diversity club
took it upon themselves to sponsor a rather needy primary school here in St. Lucia. To assist them in raising money they organized
a raffle with the top prize being a television. They raised $890.00 to support their plan to have a Christmas party
for an identified grade 3 class. The student body then decided to raise funds to support the rest of the student body. Through
donations they managed to raise another $675.00 to purchase school supplies and physical education materials for the students.
In addition to monetary donations, some students and their families actually purchased school supplies for the cause. The
students also purchased sweets to provide every child with a small gift. The donations and party were well received by the
students and as one of the young members of the diversity club stated, "It feels good to help someone who doesn't have
much."
We recently held "participaction" days for our elementary and secondary students. These events
were organized by members of the student council along with their staff advisor. The secondary students began with a triathlon.
The events included distance running, distance swimming and hill climbing. Once these events concluded we all headed to Choc
Beach where we had a barbecue and played football and volleyball on the beach before relaxing in the ocean. The elementary
students engaged in Frisbee baseball, flags, egg and balloon tosses, sand castle building and free swim. In both cases
the students were put into mixed grade teams with the focus on having fun and building school spirit; however, some healthy
competition was also in evidence.
