Art workshop in District 1 with help of ISSL
Often our staff is asked to assist in the schools of St. Lucia - and they do so
willingly - with the approval and support of International School. Mrs. Graves has given two workshops in literacy on
Saturdays, is working with Baboneau School on improving writing, and is poised to begin with the Primary School in Gros Islet.
Mr. Bloodworth was asked to help out with the art program in District 1. Below find an article and photos about
that work.
On 1 Oct 2010, at the District 1 Education Office in Union an art workshop covering some aspects of
drawing, painting, and crafts was set up. Nine participants came plus the two other presenters for 11 in total. I
presented the Drawing section, which was to begin at 9:00 am and actually ran from 9:30am to 10:30 am. The workshop
was arranged by Mr. Nigel Fedee, art teacher at Corinth and the District One Officer Mr. Everist John. I was asked to present
about drawing portraits. In the drawing portion I therefore presented the underlying steps, skills that need to be there in
order to do a portrait. These included: a.) everyone can draw - asked them to write out their name, stating
that this was a little drawing. b.)What everyone does not learn to do is "see". Children come in "looking"
and "naming" what is in front of them and as a drawing teacher the task is to get them to "see" the lines,
angles, shapes, space, negative, space, shades, etc. that are there. d.)I went over the steps that take a student from
that upside down drawing to drawing a portrait in three quarter view. I left a set of six different handout sets, which they
could photocopy about those steps if they wished to have them and use them.
Please see the attached photos.
ISSL recognizes Mr. Bloodworth as having great expertise in the area of art, and a caring heart - bringing forth the
concept of the Peace Quilt, and running an interesting Arts and craft club for the younger set. Thank You!
