Rodney Bay, Gros Islet, St. Lucia, April 10th, 2008
Only a few weeks into its second semester
of the academic year, the International School St. Lucia proudly welcomed the latest student to join the ranks of Grade 8,
and achieved a milestone in the school’s short but fast-paced history. ISSL opened its doors in September 2006 with
a mere 29 students, which grew to 50+ by the end of the first year of operation. An astonishing 85 students started the 2007-8
school year, and the steady stream of St. Lucian and international interest has not abated. Last week, fourteen year old Shernice
(second from left in photo), joined an enthusiastic Grade 8 and was welcomed by her new classmates as ISSL’s 100th
student .
Crossing this milestone after such a short
period of operation has been hailed as quite an achievement by the International School’s Principal and Board of Governors.
A representative of the Board stated “the unprecedented growth in student numbers is a clear sign that the community
has embraced the ISSL initiative, and appreciates the quality of education provided by the school”. Currently ISSL houses
Grades 4 through 12 there are more than 80 St. Lucians in the student body, and there continues to be active interest in the
younger grades as well as the secondary grades which are already almost full for the next academic year.
Says Principal June Harkness, “Parents are realising the
advantages of starting their child in the ISSL curriculum at an early grade, and we encourage it because the system was designed
to provide a seamless education from age 4 through 18. Our students are taught using techniques which are modern, progressive
and challenging, so the longer they are exposed to the curriculum, the easier they find it to adapt. We are excited to see
this growth in Grades 4-6, and are currently working on an annexe to our location which will provide a safe, welcoming and
fun environment for them.”
